I hear a screeching noise when I turn my key to start my 2005 Element. What does this indicate?

is the engine running when you hear the screeching sound?
need more info, like dose it contue when running,or just turning over, sound like it is comeing from motor, just guessing 2 things come to mind on your post, squeling serpienten belt,no oil to rod bearings.
Thank you for your input. The screech only lasts as I turn the key then quits as soon as the car turns on. I am just worried it may indicate an issue with the starter.
The screechy noise only occurs when I turn the key, it lasts just a few seconds. I don't think it's the engine but I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem?
sounds like the starter drive is dry, nothing to really worrie about.
I just started having the same noise on my '05 element. What was the culprit with yours? was it a "dry starter"?
Hi! My car still makes the same noise when I turn the key but it's been going on now for months and my Element keeps driving without a hitch. Plus it doesn't do it all the time and it isn't the belt. I don't know what a dry starter is. If you figure it out please let me know. Thanks.
Mine has always done that especially in cold weather I have had it for 10 years now
