Advise on Honda Civic problem

Asked by WhyDidiBuy Dec 04, 2017 at 08:25 PM about the 1997 Honda Civic EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Worst first car buying experience ever.
Didn’t get it checked or anything first.
I’ve now found out it has a blown head
gasket and the transmission doesn’t
automatically shift. It works if i drive as
manual but obviously means it needs
replacing. I bought for $900 and can’t fix
both problems cause I’ve only got $500 to
spend. What should i do? Fix head gasket
and try to sell? Is there places that scrap
for more than $200? Any advice is
appreciated

The only way you can fix the head gasket for $500 is to do it yourself. Try a can of head gasket sealer as you have little to lose.

some salvage yards will give up to $400- call around- that old pile isn't worth fixin' so chalk it up to a lesson learned, try to come up with more money next time, it could take at least $1500 to find a reliable car- and Be Careful- console yourself with the fact that some people spend THOUSANDS to just wind up in the same place you are-

Hey if possible it's probably only a sensor on your transmission it. Is automatic right so that's probably a sensor or relay/fuse and for head gasket I would suggest trying to fix the transmission first try the sensor well first drain your trans oil and make sure it's clean (no metal or anything else such as sawdust or anything etc...) and it fluid is good go ahead and change transmission filter and put new trans fluid in make sure it's the right kind and not synthetic cause they don't mix and if that fixes it great if not try the shift sensor and if that works great and if not I'm out of ideas for now. But if you can fix the trans for under a hundred I would and as for the head gasket there are a few solutions if u are selling to just get rid of it the transmission being fixed will help u get more money as for head gasket u can either replace it yourself or patch it and again only patch if u ain't going to drive it and only drive it to place u are selling it and that would be liquid glass again only do this if getting rid of or if you don't ever plan on taking the head off lol cause after u liquid glass it there will be no taking it apart lol but it will fix head gasket leak long enough for you to sell it and again it could last forever but if u want it done right he'll give me a text 828-302-2277 mention the car and car guru so I know who it is but I'm out of work right now and I'll be a cheap mechanic for ya if you are close to me that is but anyway just text me I'm eddie I have a bunch of solutions for ya if ya care to get I touch with me but either way good luck and god bless
