I have a 1996 Honda civic dx that has a crack in the exhaust manifold and before it broke down it made a weird puggy noise like rough kind of knock then dies, at first it wouldn't start so I went and bought a new starter now it starts has the same noise, but after a few seconds it died out. Any answers on what may be causing it to die?

Could that be causing the car to shut off while idleing? And also create a wierd knock like noise? Or is it possible that i need new spark plugs?

Okay cool cause i have to replace it for smog and hoping that the sound isnt something worse. Guess ill just find out thanks.
