Very often after flooding the "detente shaft" in the shifter will rust in place and prevent the detente switch from working (the detente is the button on the front of the shift knob that you press in order to shift from P). On the Altima/Pathfinder the button works a spring- loaded shaft, which in turn activates a switch at the base of the shaft. If the shaft freezes from rust, the BCM detects that the detente isn't working and "I-Key System Error" displays in the cluster. This usually also makes programming a new key impossible. The fix is generally simple, remove the shift knob and pour some WD40 or Liquid Wrench down the shaft, wait about 15 minutes and then work the shaft up and down to free it. Once the shaft is free the error will clear itself.
I can provide you with some general steps that may be applicable to resetting the key fob on your vehicle: 1. Start by standing outside the vehicle with the key fob in hand. 2. Close all doors and windows of the car. 3. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, without starting the engine. 4. Press and hold the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons on the key fob simultaneously for about 10 seconds. 5. Release both buttons and check if the key fob has been successfully reset. 6. If the key fob still does not function properly, you may need to repeat the process or consult the owner's manual for specific instructions.
