2000 ford explorer will die unless warm

Asked by Christina Mar 04, 2020 at 10:32 AM about the 2000 Ford Explorer XLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 ford explorer that starts up fine but you
must let it fully warm up before attempting to drive or it
will die.
Then it takes forever to get it to stay running to warm up.
After its warm it runs and drives fine.

See if your thermostat is working. If it isn't, it will take longer to bring the car up to operating temp.

Several people have told me it's the intake gaskets but its not overheating or leaking water. I did the starter fluid test there was no fluctuation in the idle. Please help.

Before tearing into major mechanical work like intake gaskets (which I don't think is related to your problem) I would check for any failure codes that have been recorded. Any shop will read them for you hoping they can sell you parts or repairs. You may have a failing temp sensor or something similar.
