No start. Going past the recommended time to change it. Stalled out when driving. Stuff like that.

Your Focus has a timing belt, chains rarely break. They began using chains in 2004===== http://corporate.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/ask-ford-faqs?packedargs=inputtext%3DTiming%2BBelts%2Band%2BChains%26qtype%3Dqn%26questionId%3Dsuggested3==== But at least it's a non-interference engine according to .. http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92310 so if it did break things are not as bad as on some cars, but it will not start, no way

Then again there is another opinion on that. At https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081225170123AAtmHy9 (which IMO is not the most reliable of places for this kind of information) Quote: ... If the 8th digit of your VIN number is a '3' then you have the 2.0L DOHC engine, which is an interference engine. If the 8th digit of your VIN number is a 'P' then you have the 2.0L SOHC engine, which is a non-interference engine" End Quote. But http://www.ehow.com/how_5819240_tell-type-engine-ford-vin.html disputes that quote and personally I would trust ehow more than Yahoo Q&A Forums. You may have to pull the timing cover off anf look at the belt, and a 15 year old car if the belt has never been changed it needs to be asap anyway, regardless of mileage
