If they're from the same type of engine, it should work. If you're a DIY kind of guy, I'd recommend you do research on "Faulty accumulator" to see if any of those symptoms are on the "Dead" transmission. Accumulators are usually less than $30 and valve body gaskets are cheap.

It just revs in reverse... Can feel it trying. Have to put it in 4 low to creep forward. Changed filter lots of metal chips like fingernail clipping. Is your suggestion still good.

I looked at the stock list of Rock Auto a fine parts place. I put in the information you gave about one being OHV and the other SOHC and the results were identical.... the same transmission fits both, according to Rock Auto

I have a 99 explorer. The eighth digit on the vin is the engine. "X" indicates a 4.0 OHV pushrod type engine. The letter "M" suppose to mean a 4.0 SHOV engine. Could the "E" be the V8
