When I engage my 4wheel drive it seems like it's having trouble engaging and can't turn

You won't be able to engage or disengage 4WD if the driveline is bound up. Also, you shouldn't use part-time 4WD on the road if your tires are not able to slip because it locks the front and rear drive shafts together so they spin at the same speed. When you turn, the front rear axles need to spin at different speeds, so that is why you should only use part-time 4WD off-road or in consistent ice or deep snow where the tires can slip to prevent the driveline from binding up. http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/axle-wind-up.html
