I'm not sure but try this: With your steering straight ahead, back up and then go forward slowly while pulling gently on the 4x4 selector. Also, bump it in and out of gear at times while rolling. Your drive train is under tension and the gears can't release. This is normal but gets worse if tires don't match in size or wear. Hard, dry surfaces make it worse too. Hope this helps.

either check yourself, or have a mechanic check the shifter cable..

I had this happen while off roading. I fixed it by turning my engine off for 30 secs and restarted, it went right back

I have same issue. The 4wd shifter feels like it is free floating. The garage confirmed the cable broke. $550 to replace ??? Seems a little pricy??? Thoughts ?

Thankfully, this happened to me in Moab, Utah, on my '08 Rubicon ... the Jeep guy there replaced a little plastic button. He said that when Daimler had Jeep, they made it cheap as possible. The entire repair took about one hour and cost $40 the summer of 2011.
