My ford escort wagon se will start but it makes a very loud noise form my valve cover

This is most likely an upper end problem. You're going to have to have the valve cover pulled and inspect the valve springs, rocker arms, push rods etc.. as I don't believe the escorts had an overhead cam. Hopefully it's not past that because if the problem is deeper, you'll have to pull the head.

I took the oil cap off and had my wife start it while I look inside no oil came up from the pan to lube my valves so what could it be
