Anyone know anything about "low end rumble" on Audi S4's - specifically the V8 version?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I get a strange noise on start-up, usually noticeable when the engine is fairly warm, but
sometimes from cold. Someone suggested it may be "low end rumble" but just wanted to
get some more info.

I own a 2001 a8l with the 4.2 v-8 , I think what you are hearing is the cam phazers that work off oil preasure.
Hi Tom, That is at least a more attractive prospect than crankshaft bearings going! Is this something that you are more likely to hear when the engine is warm? Is it a problem or just a "normal mechanical noise" of this engine at start-up? I have been trying to work out how best to describe it, just a rattly slightly harsh sound for about 1 or 2 seconds on startup before the engine settles into a rhythm... if that makes any sense!
