There is a low pressure switch typically located at the evaporator/dryer and high pressure switch(es) typically between the evaporator and compressor. If these pressure switches are sensing too much or too little pressure, the system will not operate for safety reasons. There is a possibility of a faulty switch, but I would recommend having the system checked by a technician with proper gauges. I would not recommend bypassing switches as this could result in pretty much destroying the AC system. The cheesy gauges that come on the bottles of 134a are not very reliable and only for a reference.

Some things to check yourself would be the AC relay and fuse in the fuse block under the hood. Check connections and continuity.
