check engine soon (mil) light on on nissan frontier 2002 truck says to check gas cap and make sure filled with gas, could overflowing a bit with gas cause this

You have a big evap. leak if it saying check gas cap. I dont think overfilling with fuel would cause this. The evap system needs to be checked by a shop with the correct equipment to accurately diagnose the concern. Before you take it anywhere check to see it the gas cap is tight and seated correctly, if you have not already done so.

If it was overfilled or a loose cap, it might take a few cycles to clear the light.
