Asked by Javr007 Jun 08, 2014 at 04:11 PM about the 1996 Nissan Sentra GLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Nissan Sentra (1.6) will not engage the starter each time turn the ignition key.  sometimes it takse up to 7 or 8 tries.  Seems to be more of a problem in hot weather.  Problem was livable but now its happens too often and I am afraid one day the starter will not engage at all.

Possibly bad starter, loose connections, bad ignition switch, bad neutral safety switch or bad clutch switch if its a manual trans.

Do you hear a click when turning the ignition on? The click means power is going to the starter. If no click, it is a sign off bad ignition switch. I had the issue with my 1995 sentra some years ago.
