1996 Ford Explorer battery light came on, it stalled, and it smelled briefly

Thanks, Ed. I'm not an expert on engine smells, maybe rubber? Or electrical? I will post, with an update.
Sounds like the main V Drive belt is broken. This will cause thye alternator to stop charging and the other areas on the engine like the water pump to stop operating. Check the Fan belt. I would have the engine checked for damage as well
It does seem to be related to the serpentine belt. It starts, but smokes. I'll have it towed, to a mechanic, by AAA. More after that. Thanks
