1996 rear differential

It sometimes makes noise and occasional heavy vibration. 135,000 miles on old car , if the diffferential goes , can it just be disabled allowing the car to run with the front end only.
all wheel drive not needed for what I do with the car.

135K miles on a 96 explorer is not a lot of miles and surely not a lot of miles on a rear differential. Pull the cover off and check it out. My 96 XLT is pushing 275K and ticking along great. No 4 wheel drive though. So how would you disable the differential? Remove the drive shaft?
Hi OJ , I am not really sure ,possible remove th edrive shaft or keep it intact and remove the gear mechanism in the differential , not sure if either is possible.
I'm only speculating here but I would have to believe the front wheel drive on the vehicle was not built to carry the entire drive load of the vehicle without a rear wheel assist. I suspect you would completely blow out the front wheel drive components under the strain.
