what would cause my taillights to work and then just go off and i hit them and they come back on

A loose electrical connection would do it. It could be power or it could be the ground. Find the electrical connector and plug/unplug several time to clean the contacts.

Its a bad design. The rear light assembly rely on the springyness of the contacts...once the metal fingers lose that then they make or not-make good contact. Some folks recomend removing the bulb, bending the contacts closer together and then re-inserting the bulb. This works sometimes. I've changed the whole assembly and the problem still comes back. I say, bring back the days when we used to twist the bulb into the socket. Then we had both good electrical and mechanical contact. Good luck.
