Asked by REGMAR480 Jul 01, 2013 at 01:03 PM about the 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Ford Thunderbird 1996 -V8- 4.6 engine has crack on the front of the manifold, beside
the temperature sensor.
NOTE: This is a fiberglass or the like manifold. I used diff. chemical welders sold in the
auto parts, but the water leak reapers and so on. Car has 148K miles.
PLEASE HELPPPP!!! Thank you. Efren

Check out this website: http://www.flamingfords.info/manifoldSettlement.html ...it's plastic
and this website on a recall: http://www.crownvic.net/news/intake.shtml yes, it says Crown Vic but covers others with the 4.6 and the plastic intake manifold
one more: http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/1996/Ford/Recalls
It's a common failure for Ford 4.6L intake manifolds. Replace the manifold (I know it's not cheap) but that's the only fix I know of. JB Weld should work for a while but usually, it isn't a forever fix. It isn't a difficult part to change and the gaskets are re-usable if they aren't damaged. Be sure to soak the EGR tube with WD40 or other penetrating oil.

How could a mechanic NOT overtorque this creation? The design is laden with flaws....a world of better ideas comin' from FORD!
A Technician wouldn't over-torque them because he's read the specs and sequence first. Besides, it's pretty hard to screw up with the steel inserts the bolts go through.
