Can someone tell me why my 2000 Pontiac firebird formula smokes dark grey

The rings are worn and it's burning oil. If it smokes at start up, it's worn valve guides.

Tenspeed, is it grey smoke because that's motor in that? or mostly carbon?

How many miles Pancho? Black smoke~~unburned hydrocarbons, gasoline......white./blue tint smoke~~ motor oil. "Dark grey.".....I would lean to oil, and TS's answer. Bob, does that answer you?

i am leaning torwards it burning oil. but david is right, motor oil burning has a dark blue tint to it.

It has 171000 miles

That's enough miles to have a pretty fair amount of wear on the piston rings, if all are worn it will smoke like that, on even have broken ring(s). Do a compression check if you can. That will identify if a single or multiple cylinders are losing compression, or even if any. And keep in mind what tenspeed said, valve guides...when oil seeps past the guide seals in to combustion chamber while sitting, and big puffs of smoke upon start.

Probably burning oil. The PCV system on the LS1 powered F-Bodies is bad about putting oil in the engine. A lot of people install a catch can.

Don't think that a motor runnin' synthetic since the beginning would hardly feel broken in at 170,000-
