99 sunfire 2.2 problems

Asked by Frank Sep 02, 2015 at 06:28 AM about the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car has been sitting in the weeds for 2
years. Had a new battery and timing chain
installed before it was parked. I pulled it out,
wanting to rebuild it - 125,000 miles on it.
It's hard to crank over, have to hit the gas to
get it to start. Running hot on idle and check
engine light comes on only when idle after
driving for a bit. Sounds rough on idle...I just
changed the oil and the oil light comes on at
idle. Also the ac is out. I've read and read
and looked into replacing everything from
the MAS, the fuel regulator, ignition coil,
spark plugs, injectors, fuel pump, alternator,
etc. But haven't replaced anything yet.
Wanting to pinpoint it better. Has a whining
noise going down the road. The turbo and
air intake and all will come later once it's
running right...lol..but it does run. Looking
for suggestions.

A car that has 125,000 and is about when things are going to start going on the car. All the things you mentioned above should be changes because they are going to go anyway at some point. save you pennies and I would change the following-Mass air Flow, Fuel Regulator, Alternator, New Battery, New antifreeze, New Thermostat, New Hoses, Brakes, Tune Up including wires, Injectors. Change the tranny fluid...Good Luck with her...
