'92 Pontiac Firebird Base (3.1l) - has not much power when accelerating

Asked by Peter Nov 08, 2015 at 08:47 PM about the 1992 Pontiac Firebird Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine runs great, spark plugs and wires have been replaced, the Cat
was replaced a few years ago, but when i accelerate it doesn't have much
power anymore and it ends up using more gas then ever. I was getting up
to 25 mpg before, now its at about 15 mpg. I can get it up to highway
speeds, it just feels like something is holding it back.
Does anyone have an idea what it could be, something i can fix or replace
myself? Thanks.

Do a compression test. Just a guess but does your car have high miles and use oil?

it has 157700 mi, but i don't think it uses a lot of oil, not more than our other car ('04 Durango).

I am not sure on this year, but Pontiac have a Mas Air Flow valve in a lot of there cars, that can act like a plugged cat.
