Interior lights & alarm/chimes

Asked by BigAl53 Jan 31, 2011 at 10:53 PM about the 2006 Saturn ION 3 Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Every once in a while my saturn, you drive, stop the car, key in igniton, door closed, the chimes start & the interior light comes on.  The chimes & interior lights shouldn't come on until the door is opened.  When parked & doors locked, alarm goes off randomly.  What is the problem?

One of your door switches are faulty. The trick is finding out which one since it is randomly acting up.

the quick fix is to pull the circuit breaker if that happens at night while you're driving (assuming it will, and it's not limitted to just when you're stopped). now, fixing it for real... what you do is grab a hanes manual or something and pull your door apart (easy does it, nice and clean, don't break anything), remove the switch and run an ohmeter on it (after the breaker is pulled so you don't mess up your equipment). one of them will be off (in a perfect world, all 2 point switches are either 0 ohms or infinity ohms, but as we all know... nothing's perfect. especially intermittent electrical problems). you have three choices at this point... since it's a saturn which doesn't exist anymore you can try to find a replacement for one, replace both just to be sure, or leave it reading that the door's closed (whether that means open or closed circuit, depending on the car).
