Is It Common For The Engine To Sound Loud When Pressing On The Gas Pedal.

I just bought a 1985 Nissan 200sx automatic 2 days ago. Is it common for the engine to sound loud & muffled when normal driving? Sounds like a bad muffler or something but it drives ok.
