Pros & cons
Summary
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine. There’s also a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.
With the redesigned 2022 Lexus NX, the luxury brand is aiming at a young, affluent, diverse, and tech-savvy customer. At the same time, the new 2022 NX is built upon the brand pillars that Lexus says will support all of its future products. They include bold design, advanced technology, electrification, and a dynamic tuning recipe called Lexus Driving Signature. Does the redesigned NX reflect those foundational building blocks? We took several models for a test drive to find out.

7/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 presented a sleek and smooth design, standing out in a market where many automakers favoured aggressive styling with sharp angles and bold grilles. Mazda took a different approach, offering a more refined and elegant look that appeared aerodynamic even when stationary. While the exterior differences among the CX-5 trim levels were minimal, the base model featured practical elements like automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers. As buyers moved up the trim levels, they enjoyed enhancements such as leatherette seats, a power liftgate, and advanced lighting systems that improved visibility on winding roads.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus NX embraced a bold design with its signature spindle grille, yet it also incorporated a refined simplicity reminiscent of the Lexus IS sports sedan. The NX was longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, offering more space for passengers and cargo. The interior design aimed for minimalism, moving away from the cluttered dashboards of previous models. The NX 350 F Sport variant stood out with its sporty features, including a unique grille, 20-inch wheels, and sport-bolstered seats. Despite the minimalist approach, some controls integrated into the large touchscreen were not immediately intuitive, potentially requiring drivers to acclimate over time.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options, both delivering commendable performance. The base engine, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, produced 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available. The turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, available on higher trims, delivered 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, providing a more spirited driving experience. Fuel efficiency varied, with the most economical version achieving 9.7 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway. The turbocharged models were slightly less efficient but still competitive within the segment.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered a range of powertrains, including electrified options. The NX 350h hybrid delivered 239 horsepower with an impressive fuel economy of 6.0 L/100 km combined. The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid offered 302 horsepower and an electric range of 61 km. The NX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-litre engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive was standard across Canadian models. The NX 350 F Sport variant added adaptive suspension and additional driving modes, enhancing its sporty character. Fuel consumption for the NX 350 was estimated at 9.5 L/100 km combined, with the F Sport variant slightly higher due to its performance-oriented setup.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 was designed to meet family needs with comfort and style. The seating position and comfort level were typical for its class, though rear legroom was limited for taller passengers. The CX-5 offered 875 litres of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to 1,687 litres with the seats folded, which was below average for the segment. The interior featured straightforward climate controls, but the larger shifter and infotainment controls were not ideally positioned for all drivers.

The 2022 Lexus NX provided a more intimate and cozy interior, with comfortable seating and thoughtful padding for driver comfort. Rear passengers enjoyed ample space, with features like rear air conditioning vents and heated seats. The NX offered 643 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, increasing to 1,328 litres with the seats folded. The panoramic sunroof added to the spacious feel, and the ambient lighting system offered various themes to enhance the cabin atmosphere.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 came with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, but its operating system was not as modern or user-friendly as expected. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the lack of intuitive controls for the stereo and other functions was a drawback. The screen's positioning made it difficult for some drivers to reach, necessitating reliance on steering wheel controls for certain functions.

The 2022 Lexus NX made significant technological advancements with its new Lexus Interface infotainment system. A 9.8-inch touchscreen was standard, with a 14-inch screen available. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition, and cloud-based features. The Mark Levinson premium sound system was an option, providing excellent audio quality. The new Voice Assistant and Intelligent Assistant systems offered natural voice control, enhancing the user experience. However, the large touchscreen was prone to fingerprints and reflections, and the lack of a tuning knob was a minor inconvenience.

The 2022 Lexus NX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which included advanced safety technologies like Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist and Oncoming Vehicle Detection. The Emergency Driving Stop System was a notable feature, bringing the vehicle to a safe stop if the driver became unresponsive. The NX also offered blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist. Additional safety features were available in packages, enhancing the vehicle's overall safety profile.
