2021 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2019 model year, the Volvo XC40 enters 2021 with one major change—the addition of an all-electric powertrain option. The 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge is the Scandinavian automaker’s first mass-market pure electric vehicle, in fact.

The Recharge will be sold alongside gasoline versions of the XC40, which carry over largely unchanged, and compete against small luxury crossovers like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Lexus UX. With its electric powertrain, the Recharge is a de facto Tesla Model Y competitor. It’s also priced similar to high-end versions of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, although the two electric crossovers have somewhat different philosophies.

In addition to that zero-emission powertrain, the Recharge gets an Android-based operating system, over-the-air (OTA) software update capability for all vehicle systems, and some updates to driver-assist tech. These changes don’t apply to gasoline 2021 XC40 models, but Volvo does plan to add the Android operating system to more vehicles in the future.

Since the Recharge is the main new thing for the 2021 XC40, that’s what we focused on for this review. While the gasoline XC40 is available in three trim levels—Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription—with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) in Canada, the Recharge is only offered in a single trim level.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine. There’s also a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.

Look and feel

2021 Volvo XC40

9/10

2021 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40 presented a traditional SUV aesthetic, characterized by its tall, flat roof and upright rear hatch, aligning with the rest of Volvo's lineup through signature design elements like the “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights and a simple oval grille. Gasoline models offered a retro touch with a white contrasting roof. The XC40 Recharge differentiated itself with a blanked-off grille, unique badging, and model-specific alloy wheels, alongside a gloss black roof and mirror caps. It featured a slightly altered rear bumper due to the absence of exhaust tips and introduced a model-exclusive Sage Green Metallic colour. The interior was minimalist yet premium, with real metal trim and a combination of Nappa leather and Nubuck textile upholstery, creating a cohesive and upscale cabin environment.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 took a different design approach, opting for smooth, sleek lines that gave it a dynamic appearance even when stationary. The base GX model included features like automatic LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels, while higher trims like the GS added leatherette seats and a power liftgate. The Kuro Edition introduced unique styling elements such as Polymetal Gray paint and red leather seats. The GT trim enhanced luxury with leather upholstery and a Bose audio system, while the Signature model rivaled premium brands with Caturra Brown Nappa leather and genuine wood trim. The CX-5's interior was well-executed, with high-quality materials and a focus on fit and finish, although it lacked the spaciousness found in some competitors.

Performance

2021 Volvo XC40

8/10

2021 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40 offered a versatile powertrain lineup, with the electric Recharge model at the top. The gasoline variants featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base T4 produced 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, while the T5 delivered 248 hp and 258 lb-ft. The Recharge model shared its powertrain with the Polestar 2, boasting dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, generating a combined 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. It utilized a 78-kilowatt-hour battery pack, providing a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds. The XC40 emphasized luxury and comfort, with excellent ride quality and the option for one-pedal driving. The Recharge model also offered a towing capacity of 900 kilograms.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 provided two engine options, with the base GX model featuring a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive were standard, with all-wheel drive available. The GT trim offered a choice between the base engine and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine, standard on the Signature trim, provided spirited performance, especially in Sport mode. Fuel efficiency varied, with the most economical version achieving 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city. The CX-5's sporty driving style was complemented by a stiff suspension, offering an engaging experience but sacrificing some comfort.

Form and function

2021 Volvo XC40

7/10

2021 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40, both in its Recharge and gasoline variants, offered similar passenger and cargo space, though it was not particularly spacious compared to competitors like the Tesla Model Y. Clever storage solutions, such as a removable trash bin and large door bins, helped maximize utility. The centre console featured a well-designed storage cubby, and a wireless charging pad was optional. However, second-row occupants lacked phone-charging options, highlighting a minor shortcoming in an otherwise well-thought-out interior.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 provided a comfortable and stylish interior, though rear legroom was limited, especially with taller front-seat occupants. The SUV featured two full LATCH connections for child seats, though they were not the easiest to use. Mazda's climate controls were straightforward and effective, while the larger shifter took up more space than modern alternatives. The CX-5's cargo space was below average for the segment, with 875 litres behind the second row and 1,687 litres with the seats folded. Despite this, the CX-5 maintained a practical and user-friendly interior layout.

Technology

2021 Volvo XC40

2021 Mazda CX-5

The 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge introduced the Android Automotive OS infotainment system, featuring Google apps like Google Assistant and Google Maps. This system allowed for seamless integration with Android phones and included a 9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The Recharge model also offered over-the-air update capability, enhancing its technological appeal. Gasoline models retained the previous infotainment system, which included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Recharge model's lack of a start button and potential future updates added to its modern tech credentials.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 came standard with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, though its operating system was less intuitive than competitors. The screen's positioning made it difficult to reach, and the lack of tuning knobs added to the inconvenience. However, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provided a workaround for entertainment needs. The infotainment system's design and functionality were areas where the CX-5 fell short, despite its otherwise high-class interior.

Safety

The 2021 Volvo XC40 gasoline model received top safety ratings, including the IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. The Recharge model featured Volvo's latest sensor suite, allowing for future advancements in driver aids. The XC40's comprehensive safety package reinforced its reputation for prioritizing occupant protection.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 also earned high safety ratings, achieving the IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" designation and a five-star rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning. Optional features like a head-up display and reverse automatic emergency braking enhanced safety further. Mazda's commitment to safety was evident in the CX-5's robust suite of features and strong crash-test performance.
