The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was more than just a pretty face, though its appealing styling certainly added to its charm. Chevrolet nailed the proportions, character lines, and small details, with options for a black, white, or red-painted roof enhancing its allure. In Canada, the Trailblazer was available in four trims: LS, LT, Activ, and RS, with prices ranging from $25,998 to $30,298, plus a $1,900 destination charge from its South Korean factory. The RS trim, which we tested, had a base MSRP of $30,298, but options pushed the price to $37,653. Despite its stylish interior, the cabin was filled with hard plastic, making it hard to justify the high price tag.

The redesigned 2022 Lexus NX came in four model series: NX 250, NX 350, NX 350h, and NX 450h+, with base MSRPs from $47,400 to $59,950, excluding a $2,145 destination charge from its Ontario factory. The NX 350, which we focused on, featured a distinctive Lexus design with a spindle grille and refined styling details. It was longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, offering more space for passengers and cargo. The interior boasted NuLuxe simulated leather, with real leather available in the Executive Package. The NX 350 F Sport stood out with unique styling elements and sport-bolstered seats, while the minimalist interior design marked a departure from the previous model's button-heavy dashboard.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a turbocharged 1.3-litre three-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm, making it feel lively. The AWD version came with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the FWD had a CVT. The RS trim rode on 18-inch aluminum wheels with 22/55 all-season tires, offering a nimble and fun driving experience. However, it was noisy on highways, and the suspension struggled with speed bumps. The Trailblazer averaged 9.0 L/100 km in combined driving, slightly above the official rating.

The 2022 Lexus NX 350 had a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 and 3,600 rpm. An eight-speed automatic transmission powered all four wheels, with AWD standard in Canada. The NX 350 F Sport added Sport S, Sport+, and Custom driving modes, along with an adaptive variable sports suspension. On desert roads, the F Sport felt taut and responsive, while the regular NX 350 offered a softer ride. The NX 350's fuel consumption was 10.6 L/100 km for the F Sport and 9.2 L/100 km for the non-F Sport, with NRCan estimating 9.5 L/100 km combined.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its small size, offered impressive functionality. It could accommodate four people comfortably, with a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat in the RS trim. The rear seat, though roomy, was shaped for cargo rather than comfort. The Trailblazer provided 716 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,540 litres with the rear seats folded. The front passenger seat also folded flat, allowing for long items like surfboards.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered more interior space, though it felt cozy from the driver's seat. Heated and ventilated front seats, along with a heated steering wheel, added comfort. The F Sport trim provided better seat bolstering. Rear passengers enjoyed ample space, with rear air conditioning vents and heated seats. The NX's cargo space increased by 14% to 643 litres, expandable to 1,328 litres with the rear seats down. A panoramic sunroof and Thematic Ambient Illumination system added to the interior's appeal.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with a comprehensive infotainment system, featuring a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Standard features included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, with access to Spotify, SiriusXM, and an optional Bose audio system. The system was user-friendly, with physical controls for easy navigation. Remote engine starting and a keyless entry keypad were available, along with a hands-free power liftgate.

The 2022 Lexus NX made significant technological advancements with the new Lexus Interface infotainment system. A 9.8-inch touchscreen was standard, with a 14-inch screen optional. Both offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Voice Assistant technology. A 10-speaker sound system was standard, with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson system available. The new Voice Assistant responded to natural commands, and a three-year trial of Drive Connect service was included. Additional features included a digital mirror, head-up display, and digital key capability.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer prioritized safety with 10 airbags and a rear-seat reminder system. Chevy Safety Assist was standard, offering forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more.
