2022 GMC Yukon Reviews Summary

No longer the exclusive truck-only brand for General Motors now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

All-new for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information centre and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon was a striking presence on the road, especially for those with a penchant for chrome. Even the base SLE model boasted enough shiny elements to give it a premium appearance. As one ascended the trim levels to the Denali, the deliberate use of chrome became even more apparent. The Denali's front was dominated by a vast, multi-dimensional chrome grille, reminiscent of an industrial-sized cheese grater, flanked by GMC's signature C-shaped headlights. The 22-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, part of the optional Ultimate package, stood out against the dark Redwood Metallic paint, adding to the vehicle's commanding presence. Inside, the Yukon offered a spacious cabin with standard seating for eight, or seven with the available second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim featured four exclusive interior designs, with the Teak/Light Shale colour combo providing a premium look through contrasting colours, unique stitching, and natural wood details.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a more understated elegance. Gone were the days of Volvo's boxy designs; the XC90 presented a purposeful yet not boastful appearance. Its front end was stout and solid, with an assertive grille that avoided being overly flashy. The "Thor’s Hammer" headlights added a modern flair, while the overall dimensions maintained a rectilinear shape without resembling a toaster. The Ultimate trim test vehicle featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Grey paint with brown undertones, adding richness and depth. Inside, the XC90's design was elegant, with a two-tone leather steering wheel, metal Bowers and Wilkins speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist interior was complemented by wood deco inlays, providing a touch of nature.

Performance

2022 GMC Yukon

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered a choice of three engines, including a 5.3-litre V8 engine standard on all trims except the Denali, which produced 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The Denali and AT4 trims featured a 6.2-litre V8 engine with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. A new addition to the lineup was the 3.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, producing 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, available on all trims except the AT4. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon offered a maximum towing capacity of 3,810 kilograms with the 5.3-litre engine and the Max Trailering Package. The independent rear suspension provided better handling and a smoother ride, although some bouncing was noted over rutted pavement.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine, a mild-hybrid powertrain with 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. This setup offered minimal fuel-economy benefits but contributed to Volvo's electrification goals. The mild-hybrid system used a lithium-ion battery pack to power a 13-volt starter generator, handling functions like climate control and ignition. The XC90 delivered a reserved driving experience, with quick acceleration and a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle's brakes provided a solid pedal feel, and road noise was well-insulated. The XC90 lacked extensive off-road features, focusing instead on a straightforward driving experience.

Form and function

2022 GMC Yukon

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon provided ample space for passengers and cargo, with a redesign that increased third-row legroom by over 25 centimetres to 886 mm. Cargo space behind the third row expanded to 722 litres. The vehicle's wheelbase stretch and independent rear suspension contributed to the increased space. The second-row seats folded flat, and power fold-and-tumble bucket seats were available for easy access to the third row. The Denali trim featured a power-sliding centre console with hidden storage, and power-retractable assist steps were part of the Denali Ultimate Package.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 offered a comfortable front row with a minimalist design, but storage space was limited. The second row was spacious, but adjusting the seats was challenging. The standard seven-passenger seating could be configured to six-passenger with captain's chairs. The third row was difficult to access, and cargo space was limited compared to competitors, with 356 litres behind the third row and a maximum of 1,856 litres with all seats folded. The XC90 drove like a smaller car, contributing to its appeal.

Technology

2023 Volvo XC90

The 2022 GMC Yukon featured a 12-inch reconfigurable driver information centre and a 15-inch head-up display on the Denali trim. The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system included Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Bose 14-speaker audio system. The Denali Ultimate Package added a rear-seat media system with dual 12.6-inch touchscreens.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display ran on Google OS, with features like Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system supported Apple CarPlay, but integration was less seamless. The XC90's minimalist design meant many functions were controlled via the touchscreen, which could be frustrating. Keyless entry was standard, and a head-up display was optional.

The 2022 GMC Yukon came with GMC's Pro Safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance. The Pro Safety Plus package added blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The Yukon received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety, with a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The XC90's Pilot Assist technology helped maintain distance and lane position.
