Summary
In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid compact SUV is a solid choice in its rather limited class, with an easily attained sub-6 litres per 100 kilometres fuel economy, pleasant driving characteristics, and high levels of comfort. A new infotainment system helps its standing, as does a new off-road capable RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition that’s based on the XLE trim level.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
6/10

The 2023 Volvo XC90 marked a significant departure from the brand's past design ethos, which was often likened to utilitarian appliances. This model showcased a purposeful yet understated aesthetic, with a stout front end and a bold grille that avoided being ostentatious. The signature "Thor’s Hammer" headlights added a modern touch, while the overall shape retained a hint of the rectilinear style without resembling a household toaster. The Ultimate trim featured 21-inch wheels that added a touch of drama, complemented by a Platinum Grey paint with subtle brown undertones. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with its two-tone leather steering wheel, metal speaker covers, crystal shift knob, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist interior design was enhanced by wood deco inlays, creating a serene and sophisticated atmosphere.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid embraced a more robust and angular design since its 2019 redesign. The trapezoidal grille, borrowed from Toyota's truck line, was framed by beveled bodywork, giving the RAV4 a substantial presence. The interior continued the angular theme with a multi-tiered dashboard and practical layout, featuring an infotainment touchscreen and physical controls for primary functions. While the materials were average for its class, the build quality was solid, and most trims offered a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The RAV4 Hybrid's design was functional and straightforward, appealing to those who valued practicality over luxury.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine, a mild-hybrid powertrain that replaced the older T5 and T6 engines. This new setup offered 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than its predecessor but with improved fuel efficiency and smoother operation. The mild-hybrid system used a lithium-ion battery to power a 13-volt starter generator, enhancing the vehicle's auto stop-start technology. The XC90 delivered a refined driving experience with quick acceleration, a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission, and excellent insulation from road and wind noise. While it lacked extensive off-road capabilities, the XC90's simplicity in driving dynamics appealed to those who preferred straightforward operation.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid combined a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 219 horsepower. This setup allowed the RAV4 to accelerate to 100 km/h in approximately 7.5 seconds, making it quicker than the standard RAV4. The hybrid system's regenerative braking efficiently charged the battery, while the suspension provided a smooth ride over various road conditions. The RAV4 Hybrid's driving dynamics were competent, offering a balanced and comfortable experience without being overly sporty. It was a practical choice for those seeking efficiency and reliability in a compact SUV.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 offered a serene front cabin experience, though its Scandinavian minimalism led to limited storage space for smaller items. The second row was comfortable but adjusting the seats proved challenging. The standard seven-passenger seating could be altered to six-passenger with captain's chairs, but accessing the third row was difficult. Cargo space was competitive, with 356 litres behind the third row and up to 1,856 litres with all rear seats folded, though it fell short compared to some rivals. The XC90's smaller size contributed to its nimble driving feel, making it a practical choice for those who valued manoeuvrability.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid provided ample space for front passengers and adequate room for rear passengers, though taller individuals might desire more thigh support. Cargo capacity was impressive, with 1,059 litres available behind the rear seats, comparable to its competitors. The RAV4 excelled in interior storage, offering a wide dashboard shelf, a phone tray, large cupholders, and a spacious centre armrest bin. Dual-zone climate control was standard on all trims except the base Hybrid LE, enhancing comfort for occupants.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 featured a 9-inch vertically positioned touchscreen running on Google OS, integrating Android Auto and Google Assistant. The system offered seamless natural-language recognition and allowed commands via Google Home devices. However, the reliance on touchscreen controls for key functions could be frustrating, and more physical buttons would have been appreciated. Keyless entry was standard, with an optional head-up display available for added convenience.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid introduced a new multimedia infotainment system with modern graphics and logical menu arrangements. Most trims came with an 8.0-inch display, while higher trims upgraded to a 10.5-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with an optional wireless charging pad. The system supported over-the-air updates and included a Wi-Fi hotspot. Higher trims featured a fully digital instrument panel and an 11-speaker JBL audio system, enhancing the overall tech experience.
