This suddenly started happening the day after putting in a new car battery (not sure it's
related): Turn on the radio and "CODE" is on display where station numbers should be
and the red 'anti-theft' light is lite. Radio will not work. Any ideas how to turn off anti-theft
so radio will work? Original radio, has cassette player. Thxs for feedback.

I think there is a special CODE you have to punch in to make the system work again. You will probably have to call the dealer and give them your VIN# so they can look up the code. This is in case the stereo gets stolen the thief will not have the code to make the stereo work. Makes it pointless to steal the radios anymore.

There is a problem with yours a big hassle. For 2001 and on, you can fetch the serial number by doing certain steps on the pre-set station number pad. pre -2001 it says you have to take the radio out, the serial number is on the back. Call Honda America Client Services at 1-800-999-1009. You will be required to provided your VIN number, radio serial number, as well as proof of ownership. From: https://radio-navicode.honda.com/
Have you googled "1996 Honda Radio Codes"? Don't know for sure if your's would be there, but I have found many radio codes this way for many different vehicles.
I have same problem on my 2010 EXL coupe....battery dead...no radio or alarm....no sticker in the side of the interior glove box like there is in my 2013 Crosstour..........I have to go to the Honda dealer but might as well try the 800 number the gentleman suggested above because who wants to go into a Honda dealer if they don't have to>
