Possibly the fuel pump, or the mesh sock attached to the fuel pick-up got clogged. The gas is the coolant for the pump, and will overheat trying to pump gas that is not there

I would agree with FordN diagnosis. Try this just for confirmation. See if this vehicle has an in line gas filter under the hood ....driver side. It might be restricted. Also....when the engine starts and runs....smack the bottom of the gas tank with the palm of you hand to see if this vehicle runs for a longer period of time. Don't forget to re-attach the gas filter before start up.
