Overheating

Asked by David Oct 26, 2018 at 12:22 AM about the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2011 grand Cherokee and it
is overheating. It’s been staying at
230-245 temp. It stays at this
temperature while I’m stopped and
driving. It does go down to 220-225
when I go 70+ mph. I replaced the
radiator cap and the thermostat. It’s
still run hot at the same temperature.
I did see a little bit of antifreeze on
the plastic at the bottom. Can’t see
any visible signs of a leak on any
hoses. What else can be the
problem?

I'm thinking your radiator cooling fans are not coming on when stopped or in slow traffic. Going above 25 mph provides enough air flow to cool things. So check the fan, the fan fuse and relay, and there's a temperature sensor or controller in there somewhere. Check it out and try not to overheat the engine too much. One more thing, there was talk about the water pump in the Hemi has plastic impellers that crumble away and water will not circulate. Uncap radiator on cooled engine and look for coolant movement as engine warms up.....while revving it up a little. Does the flow of heat reach the heater? "No" means pump isn't pumping much.
