2002 jeep liberty

About a week ago when I was driving to work I hit a
pothole and heard a very loud pop that came from the
front and my car broke down. When I pulled over the car
wasn't running anymore. I was still able to start the car
but it didn't move when I placed it on drive. My mechanic
told me it was the transmission that went out. So I had
the transmission switched. Ever since I got the car back
I noticed a whining noise coming from the back? I did
some research and seems like it's the differential that
needs repairs. When I drive and go over 40 mph the
whining noise appears and also when I am coming to a
stop. Anyone has any idea what it could be?

You may have damaged the differential. I would have a differential shop check it out. Maybe they can adjust the gear preload.
