When u hear a couple thumps like in the rear end area and all a sudden transmission not shifting right but was fine just the day before what could this be

Transmissions are complicated devices. Rather than purchasing one which is 17 years old, even if it fits, is not a good investment. If it fails you've wasted the price of the old transmission plus any installation cost. I suggest you either have your transmission repaired or purchase one from Ford with years long warranty.
