2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class: Price, Specs and Release Date

by Stephanie Wallcraft

Another iconic vehicle is going electric. This time, it’s the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Germany’s signature luxury off-roader. While it’s currently being called the 2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class in communications, it will likely become known colloquially as the G-Class EV. At times, it has also been known as the Mercedes-Benz EQG in line with other Mercedes electric models.

The G-Class EV promises to combine a fully electric architecture with a ladder frame and serious off-roading capability. Here’s everything we know so far about the 2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class. Be sure to bookmark this page: we’ll update it as we receive more information.

2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class in Canada: What we know so far

2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class styling

From the outside, the Electric G-Class looks much like its gas-powered predecessors, though there are hints at the lack of petrol beneath the hood. The key detail is the closed-off grille, which is visually similar to the grilles of the past but does not permit air flow since cooling is not needed. Other EV-specific details include a slightly raised hood, new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof strip, and flared rear wheel arches with integrated air curtains for improved aerodynamics.

For its first model year in Canada, the Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class will be available exclusively in Edition One specification. This well-featured trim is available in Canada in five colours, four of which are black, white or grey. (The fifth is called South Sea Blue Magno.)

The Edition One integrates unique details such as a blue trim strip in the exterior molding, blue brake calipers, and projections from the side mirrors that shine “Stronger Than Time” lettering onto the pavement. The AMG Line and Night Package is standard equipment, which adds aerodynamic 20-inch AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels in high-gloss black as well as tinted exterior lighting, G-logo door handle buttons, and black exterior mirror housings.

2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class interior design and practicality

Interior styling on the G-Class EV looks very similar to today’s gas-powered G-Wagens. On the Edition One, silver pearl and black Nappa leather upholstery and steering wheel wrapping is standard. Blue continues into the interior with carbon fibre trim elements and blue stitching.

The Electric G-Class comes with a familiar tech setup in the form of two 12.3-inch screens: a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen operating the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (or MBUX) infotainment system. Two 11.6-inch displays are optional for the backs of the front seats to add rear-seat entertainment. A Burmester premium audio system with Dolby Atmos technology is standard equipment on all G-Class EVs.

One thing to note about the G-Class EV is that it’s shorter on storage space than its gas-powered counterparts. There’s no frunk (or front trunk) as is offered in other EVs, and the cargo area offers 555 litres of space, making it around 90 litres smaller than the cargo area in a gas-powered G-Wagen.

The list of standard safety and driver assistance features on the G-Class EV is extensive. Look for Active Distance Assist, Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist (or forward collision warning and mitigation), Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, a driver attention monitor, a 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, and Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe features to be included on all Electric G-Class SUVs.

2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class engines, motors and drive

The Electric G-Class integrates four individually controlled electric motors built into the ladder frame near each of the wheels. These develop a combined output of 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque, which takes the G-Class EV from 0–96 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Each individual motor can act independently to power the wheels on demand, which allows Mercedes to add some exceptional maneuverability features. The G-Turn feature allows the G-Class EV to rotate in place on loose or unpaved surfaces (see video, below). With G-Steering, the large SUV can operate with a significantly tighter turning circle when driving off-road. Other off-road oriented features include a crawl function, low range off-road gear reduction, an independent front suspension and solid rear axle, virtual differential locks, and a new Off-road Cockpit feature that displays relevant information on the infotainment screen.

The Electric G-Class has 24.9 centimetres of ground clearance, up to 35 degrees of lateral stability, and a maximum fording depth of 85 centimetres.

The 116-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery is protected by a torsion resistant casing and additional shielding using carbon and other materials. The G-Class EV will be capable of a 200 kW charging rate, though no range estimates are available as of this writing.

2025 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class price and release date

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is expected to arrive in Canada sometime in the second half of 2024. For the first model year, it will be available only in the decked-out Edition One trim. No pricing has been announced as of this writing, but we won’t be shocked to see it land well within luxury tax territory, likely with a starting price north of $200,000.
