2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9: Price, Specs and Release Date

by Stephanie Wallcraft

Until now, three-row SUVs have been hard to come by. Larger and heavier vehicles draw more battery power, so it’s taken some developments in battery technology for three-row EVs to become feasible. Now, some competitors are finally emerging for the Tesla Model X, which for a long time had the playing field to itself. The Kia EV9 recently launched to positive reviews, and the Volvo EX90 is coming later in 2024 after extended delays. And the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is not far behind. Shown as a concept in 2021, the IONIQ 9 six-seat SUV has recently been spied in testing, so a full reveal is likely right around the corner.

Originally, we discussed this vehicle under the monicker Hyundai IONIQ 7. Reports have more recently emerged that it will be called the Hyundai IONIQ 9 at launch, leaving room for an electric crossover to slot between this and the IONIQ 5. This would align the three-row’s designation with the closely related Kia EV9 from Hyundai’s sibling brand.

Here’s everything we know so far about the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 in Canada. Be sure to bookmark this page: we’ll update it as we receive more information.

2029 Hyundai IONIQ 9 styling

The SEVEN concept vehicle on which the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is based, pictured here, lifts its styling cues heavily from the Hyundai IONIQ 5 that came before it. A line of pixelated LED lights spans the entire front end of the vehicle, with two vertical light bars mounted at either end. The side profile is distinct and edgy with sharp angles and a pronounced, sweeping shoulder line. The concept vehicle shows a massive pane of glass on the liftgate atop three long rows of pixelated brake lighting, though we expect little of this to make it through to the production vehicle.

2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 interior design and practicality

Inside the SEVEN concept vehicle, there’s plenty of breezy light-coloured upholstery and impractical elements unlikely to see production such as coach doors, swiveling captain’s chairs, and massive panes of glass on every side. What we do expect to see in the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is plenty of interior space thanks to the fully flat loading floor, as well as the latest technology, large infotainment screens, and sustainably sourced materials in keeping with the demands of EV buyers. The proportions of the IONIQ 9 are expected to align closely with those of the seven-seat Hyundai Palisade.

2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 motors and drive

Few specifics are available at this time regarding the Hyundai IONIQ 9’s drive systems, though they’re likely to align closely with those of the related Kia EV9. We do know Hyundai is targeting a range of well over 400 kilometres and fast-charging speeds of 350 kW, which could allow the IONIQ 9 to recover from 10 to 80 percent of its charge in roughly 20 minutes.

On the Kia EV9, two battery sizes are available. The base 76.1 kWh battery is paired with a single motor for RWD and has a range of 370 kilometres. A larger 99.8 kWh battery powers the rest with ranges spanning from 435 to 489 km, depending on trim level and options.

2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 price and release date

The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 hasn’t yet been revealed in its production form, so we expect it will be some time before orders open to the public. As of now, it’s still feasible we could see the IONIQ 9 announced sometime in 2024 as a 2025 model, though it’s more likely Hyundai’s new three-row EV will enter production sometime in 2025 and launch for model year 2026. When it lands, expect it to be priced to qualify for federal and provincial EV rebates.
