Best Diesel Trucks in Canada in 2025

by Stephanie Wallcraft

These days, trucks are used for much more than hard labour. They’re expected to sit in school pick-up lines and handle weekend road trips. But when they’ll also be called upon to get to work sites and drive long distances, diesel trucks are still the way to go. These workhorses are preferred for their durability, versatility, payload and towing capacity, and fuel economy. They’re still the go-to choice for tradespeople, outdoor adventure seekers, and people who live in remote rural communities.

This list of the best diesel trucks in Canada in 2025 also happens to be a complete list of all trucks you can buy with a diesel engine today. With diesel being dropped from the Jeep Gladiator, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon midsize trucks, and even full-size trucks like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 Ecodiesel, there aren’t many options left on the Canadian market for diesel afficionados. With that in mind, we’ve highlighted points such as each truck’s size, which trim levels offer diesel engine options, and fuel efficiency ratings (where available; Natural Resources Canada doesn’t rate heavy-duty trucks). With these combined resources, you’ll be well-equipped to make an informed choice about your next diesel truck purchase.

Prices shown include destination charges and any declared dealer fees but exclude options and sales taxes. While pricing was current as of publication time, it is subject to change.

Best Diesel Trucks in Canada in 2025

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

With the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 dropping their diesel pickup truck options for the 2024 model year, there are only two half-ton trucks left on the market that offer a diesel powertrain, and both come from General Motors. For the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the engine on offer is a 3.0-litre Duramax turbodiesel making 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and available with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) drivetrains. The diesel engine is available starting at the LT trim in regular cab, double cab, and crew cab configurations and on every trim level thereafter, and it’s standard equipment on the Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2. In the double-cab Chevrolet Silverado diesel with RWD, a standard bed, 2WD, the Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels, you’ll get the trucks maximum towing capability of 6,032 kilograms (13,300 pounds). Fuel economy ratings are 10.0 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, 8.3 on the highway, and 9.3 combined with RWD and range from 10.6/9.0/9.9 to 11.7/10.3/11.1 with 4WD, the latter being the highest figure for the ZR2. Pricing for the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel starts in Canada at $65,778.

Heavy-duty trucks and diesel powerplants go hand in hand. In Chevy’s heavy-duty arsenal, you’ll find a 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 generating 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and offered with RWD or 4WD. An electronically controlled Power Take Off (PTO) mode with overdrive can be added to the transmission, which adds a tow/haul mode for better gearing with heavy loads and automatic grade engine braking. The version with PTO is available on the WT, Custom, and LT grades on both the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD with either RWD or 4WD, including in dually trucks, while the standard Duramax diesel engine is offered on every configuration. The max tow rating comes from the Silverado 3500 HD with a regular cab, long bed, RWD WT trim, dual rear wheels, a Max Trailering Package, and a gooseneck hitch, which delivers 16,329 kilograms (36,000 pounds). In a rarity among heavy-duty trucks, adaptive cruise control is offered on every trim level as of 2024. Official fuel consumption figures are not available because Natural Resources Canada does not publish them for heavy duty trucks. Pricing for the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Diesel starts in Canada at $74,108, while the 2024 Chevy Silverado 3500HD with a diesel starts at $76,808.

2025 Ford F-450 Super Duty Preview - summary

Ford Super Duty

With the Ford F-150’s diesel engine retired, the Ford Super Duty is the sole standard bearer for diesels in the Blue Oval’s line-up. There, you’ll receive a 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 producing 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. If that’s just not enough power, you can opt for the high-output version, where you’ll see 500 hp and a face-melting 1,200 lb-ft of torque. In either case, gears are selected through a 10-speed automatic with RWD or available 4WD. Both versions are available on nearly every configuration, while the diesel is standard on every F-450 and the high-output engine is standard on the F-250, F-350, and F-450 Limited grades. Fuel consumption figures are not published for three-quarter ton and one-ton trucks.
