Best Sedans in Canada in 2025

by Stephanie Wallcraft

Canada is, without doubt, an SUV and truck market. Roughly 85 percent of the vehicles sold in this country fall into those two categories today. But cars are still here, and they offer some advantages that shouldn’t be overlooked. They handle better than their larger and heavier counterparts, and they tend to be more fuel-efficient on average. Sedans in particular offer a cargo space that’s separate from the main cabin, which some owners may find to be a benefit. (Sports parents with smelly equipment bags, we’re looking at you.) The higher ground clearance and load floor offered in SUVs and trucks make them popular, but where performance is concerned, cars remain strong contenders.

Sedans were once considered a budget choice, but that’s no longer universally true. Several models sold in Canada today come with a default set of safety and technology features along with standard or available all-wheel drive (AWD). If you’re thinking about driving home in a four-door sedan when you buy your next car, take a look at this list of the best sedans available in Canada in 2025. We’ve compiled this ranking of the best cars with trunks based on characteristics like fuel efficiency, safety, comfort, up-to-date technology features, and value. We’ve split it up into small, midsize, and large car categories to help you narrow down your selections. There are some hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) here, but if you’re looking for a battery electric vehicle, head over to our list of the best electric cars in Canada.

Prices shown include manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) plus destination charges and dealer fees, but they exclude options and sales taxes. While pricing was current as of the time of publication, note it’s subject to change.

2024 Genesis G70 review summary

2025 Genesis G70

The Genesis G70, a small car from Hyundai’s luxury brand, received a refresh in 2024. This includes a new base engine, replacing the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from 2023 with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The sporty V6 carries on as a 3.3-litre twin-turbo making 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Both an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD remain standard. Fuel economy measures up at 10.2 L/100 kilometres in combined driving with the new four-cylinder, while the V6 consumes 12.7 L/100 km combined. In Canada, pricing for the 2025 Genesis G70 starts at $54,500. This not only includes destination charges and other fees, but it also includes at-home concierge service for test drives, vehicle delivery, and service appointments, plus five years of scheduled maintenance and map updates and more.

2024 Hyundai Elantra

2025 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra compact sedan was also refreshed for the 2024 model year with design and technology updates. Three powertrains are available between the standard Elantra’s four trims. The entry-level engine used on Essential, Preferred, and Luxury is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder paired with a CVT that makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. This engine consumes 6.5 to 6.9 L/100 km in combined driving. There’s a hybrid powertrain available for the Luxury trim that combines a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, creating a total system output of 139 hp and 195 lb-ft mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). With this powertrain, the Elantra Hybrid averages just 4.7 L/100 km combined, which puts it among the most fuel-efficient vehicles you can buy in Canada. In the Elantra N-Line Ultimate, a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder generates 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque and is paired to a 7-speed DCT. All versions of the Elantra are sold exclusively with front-wheel drive (FWD). A solid list of standard features is offered such as heated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (though on higher trims these features require a cable), and plenty of safety and driver assistance features. Pricing for the 2025 Hyundai Elantra starts in Canada at $24,809. And then there’s the revamped Hyundai Elantra N, delivering a genuinely track-ready driving experience and available with a DCT or a 6-speed manual transmission. Pricing on the 2025 Hyundai Elantra N starts in Canada at $42,409.

2024 Mazda Mazda3 review summary

2025 Mazda3

It’s not the cheapest compact car on the market, but the Mazda3’s near-premium packaging makes it a great value. You can option your Mazda3 sedan with AWD, and there’s also a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine among the powertrain options, which bumps power output from 191 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft. What’s not available on the Mazda3 sedan is a manual transmission, though you can still find one on the closely related Mazda3 Sport hatchback. Fuel economy for the Mazda3 sedan ranges from 7.5 to 8.8 L/100 km combined, depending on the drivetrain selected. Canadian pricing for the 2025 Mazda Mazda3 starts at a new car price of $27,687.

2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

2025 Toyota Corolla

Canada’s best-selling car in 2023 was the Toyota Corolla, meaning it rained on the Honda Civic’s parade for two years in a row. (That streak ended in 2024, when the Civic regained its top sales position.) It’s clear the Corolla’s lower starting price and Toyota’s overall brand reputation for reliability matter to Canadian buyers. In sedan format, the Corolla is available with gas or hybrid powertrains. The gas-only version is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 169 hp and averaging 6.7 or 6.8 L/100 km combined depending on the trim. In its hybrid format, the Corolla is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor producing a total system output of 138 hp. It’s available with FWD, where it averages 4.7 L/100 km combined, or with AWD, which ranges from 4.9 to 5.3 L/100 km combined depending on the trim. Either way, it makes for frugal and efficient commuting. Pricing for the 2025 Toyota Corolla starts in Canada at $26,565.

2023 Volkswagen Jetta review summary

Honourable Mentions

The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta starts from $28,381 in Canada and comes in base guise or the more performance-oriented GLI sport sedan. Opt for the 2025 Lexus IS if you want to shop from a wide range of some of the best luxury options, starting at $51,598. If you’d prefer something even smaller, the 2025 Nissan Versa is Canada’s most affordable new car for 2025 and the only subcompact sedan left on the market, priced from $23,405. The BMW 3 Series has several powertrain choices including the high-performance beast that is the BMW M3; the base 2025 BMW 330i starts in Canada from $60,157. And don’t pass over the wolf in sheep’s clothing that is the Volvo S60 Recharge plug-in hybrid, starting from $58,389.

Best Midsize Sedans in Canada

2024 BMW 5 Series review summary

2025 BMW 5 Series

Redesigned for 2024, the BMW 5 Series offers a great blend of classic German sensibilities with modern features and technologies. It’s currently available in two formats in Canada. The base BMW 530i xDrive comes with 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. Its 7.9 L/100 km combined average is impressive for a midsize sedan. The twin-screen setup for the touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster is one of the best on the market once you get past the learning curve, and the standard M Sport suspension provides driving dynamics that are as responsive as ever. The 2025 BMW 530i xDrive starts in Canada from $74,457. There’s also the BMW 550e PHEV, which provides 483 hp from its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six matched with hybrid components. It has up to 55 kilometres of electric-only range and averages 3.5 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, or 9.6 L/100 km when operating in hybrid mode. The 2025 BMW 550e starts in Canada at a price of $87,457. For this generation, the M Sport version of the 5 Series is the BMW i5 M60i EV, which we’ve covered separately.

2024 Honda Accord

2025 Honda Accord

There are two cars that are mainstays on every list of the best family sedans around, and one of them is the Honda Accord. Honda is leaning more heavily toward hybridization with the latest version of the Accord, which shows in its packaging: there’s just one gas-only trim in 2025, while the top two trims are hybrids. In the base SE, the Accord has a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque and averages 7.3 L/100 km. Those are decent figures for a mainstream sedan, but if you jump to the hybrid you receive a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with Honda’s latest hybrid drive system, netting 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque as well as a 5.3 L/100 km combined fuel economy average. One thing to note is the Accord is offered with FWD only. Pricing for the 2025 Honda Accord starts in Canada at $40,266.

2024 Hyundai Sonata

2025 Hyundai Sonata

Pickings in the midsize sedan segment keep getting slimmer: Kia Canada, a sibling automaker to Hyundai, discontinued the Kia K5 for 2024. Since it offered great looks, power, and standard AWD on most trims, we feel it would have earned a spot here. In its place, we’ll suggest the Hyundai Sonata with two caveats: AWD is available but not standard, and as of this writing there are no plans to continue with the hybrid variant following the 2024 refresh. As it stands, you can purchase a 2024 Hyundai Sonata with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine in the Preferred-Trend trim, which generates 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque and offers standard FWD or available AWD. In the N-Line, FWD is standard and is matched to a 2.5-litre turbo four-cylinder creating 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. Canadian pricing for the 2025 Hyundai Sonata starts at $35,759.

2024 Toyota Camry

2025 Toyota Camry

Another key mainstay among the best midsize sedans is the Toyota Camry. A new generation of Camry has launched for the 2025 model year with a hybrid powertrain as standard equipment across the board. This combination of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and Toyota’s hybrid drive system generates 225 hp with FWD and 232 hp on models equipped with Camry’s available AWD. Fuel economy tops out at 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres, which is a great figure for a midsize sedan. Blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams are all standard features, which makes it easier to overlook the electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT). Pricing for the 2025 Toyota Camry starts in Canada at $37,295.

2024 Nissan Altima review summary

Honourable Mentions

If you’re looking for the lowest possible price to access AWD in a midsize sedan, take a look at the 2025 Nissan Altima. Here, AWD is standard at a starting price of $34,585. The Cadillac CT5 is an interesting vehicle, particularly in its CT5-V and Blackwing iterations, starting from $48,133 (2024 pricing; 2025 pricing was not available at publication time). The 2025 Genesis G80 is a classy luxury mid-size vehicle with all-in pricing and five years of scheduled maintenance included, starting at $74,000. The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes in two standard and two AMG sports car configurations, starting from $74,900 (before fees; Mercedes-Benz Canada allows dealers to set destination charges individually).

Best Large Sedans in Canada

2024 BMW 7 Series

2025 BMW 7 Series

The current BMW 7 Series, the Bavarian brand’s flagship, is a statement vehicle if ever there was one. Bold, squared-off lines give it a very upright, estate saloon feel, which is counter to the rounded aerodynamics more commonly seen on cars with electric variants. That EV version is the i7, which we’ve covered separately. In its gas-powered formats, the 7 Series has two powertrains available. The base 760i xDrive is fitted with a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with 536 hp, standard AWD, and a fuel consumption rating of 11.5 L/100 km combined. There’s also a plug-in hybrid version, the 750e xDrive, which has a combined 483 hp and is rated for up to 55 km of all-electric driving range before consuming 9.4 L/100 km combined in hybrid mode. The BMW 7 Series has a Canadian starting price of $154,908 (2024 pricing; 2025 pricing was not yet published as of this writing).

2024 Genesis G90

2025 Genesis G90

Genesis may not be the brand that immediately comes to mind when you think of an opulently appointed large luxury sedan, but it’s possible it should be. The Genesis G90 is a worthy executive sedan with a spacious and luxurious rear seat, great technology features, sleek looks, and plenty of power. Its 3.5-litre turbocharged and e-supercharged V6 produces 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque sent to standard AWD, with an estimated fuel consumption average of 11.8 L/100 km combined. In Canada, the 2025 Genesis G90 is sold in a single trim level with an all-in price of $117,000. This includes a long list of standard safety features, all destination charges and fees, plus at-home concierge service for test drives and service appointments, five years of scheduled maintenance and map updates, and more.

2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Few things in life tell the world you’ve made it like owning a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In Canada, the three-pointed star’s flagship sedan comes in five iterations. The base S 500 includes a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system, making 429 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and fitted with standard AWD. Combined fuel consumption measures up at 9.6 L/100 km combined. Step up to the S 580 to receive the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 mild hybrid and its 496 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. For this version, expect to consume 12.0 L/100 km combined. In its AMG S 63 E Performance plug-in hybrid, you get up to 26 kilometres of electric only driving to go with the total system output of 791 hp and an insane 1,055 lb-ft of torque. In hybrid mode, this S-Class requests 13.0 L/100 km in combined driving.

There are also two Mercedes-Maybach S-Class configurations available in Canada in 2025. The Maybach S 580 takes the same powertrain found in the standard S 580 and surrounds it with the pinnacle of luxury, while the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 uses a handcrafted 6.0-litre biturbo V12 to produce 621 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. If you can afford its $315,500 price tag, you’re likely not fazed to learn it consumes 16.1 L/100 km in city driving and 11.6 on the highway. As for the rest of the line-up, pricing for the 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts in Canada at $147,500. These prices do not include destination and fees as Canadian Mercedes-Benz dealers set these amounts individually.

2023 Toyota Crown review summary

2025 Toyota Crown

With the gas-powered Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon, and others being discontinued in Canada, full-size sedans have become the domain of the luxury set in recent years. But if you want to come close for a reasonable price, check out the 2025 Toyota Crown. It’s not all the way to a large sedan but it has a roomy cabin relative to a typical mid-size, and it’s a compelling vehicle attached to a nameplate returning to North America after a long absence. The base Limited grade is equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with hybrid drive, producing 236 hp and burning 5.7 L/100 km combined. In the Platinum grade, the sportier 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Hybrid Max powertrain generates 340 hp and burns 7.8 L/100 km. Pricing for the 2025 Toyota Crown starts in Canada at $57,382.

2024 Audi S8
