Your battery is dead. Or loose/dirty battery connections. Also sounds like your alternator is bad with your lights going dim while driving. I would fully charge the battery then once you get it started again test the alternator. It should be putting out 14.5 volts to keep your battery fully charged

But if the battery is dead I wouldn't get any lights when i put the key in? And how long should I charge the battery?

Battery might have enough power to work lights because they draw very little amps. But the starter on the other hand draws a bunch and needs a battery that is fully or almost fully charged to turn it over properly. I would charge for a couple hours at least. And be sure to have your alternator tested. With what you described I feel that your main issue is that the alternator is not keeping your battery fully charged.
