2004 TSX losing oil - not burning and not leaking

Asked by oilconfused Sep 16, 2009 at 10:03 PM about the 2004 Acura TSX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a used 2004 TSX in December and it seems i'm losing oil somehow. i change my oil religiously every 3000miles, but the last two times i went, the mechanic said my dipstick was dry. so i checked my oil at 1500 miles this time and it was dry again. I dont think i'm leaking oil bc when i leave my parking space in the morning, i dont see any oil spill and i'm not burning oil because theres no smoke coming out of my exhaust.

has anyone else had this problem or know what the problem could possibly be?

I own a 2004 TSX bought new in May of 2003. At around 95K miles it started burning oil. It now has 125K and has not gotten much worse but is going through a quart every 1200 miles or so. Various knowledgeable folks (including the dealer's service manager) say that kind of consumption is fairly common for this particular Honda engine. Sad but true. I just tried something new, adding a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, at my last oil change, on recommendation from my mechanic. Stay tuned for results in a few weeks when I check on it...

I have since sold my 04 TSX, but I am happy to report that the addition of the Lucas Oil Stabilizer, which you can get at PepBoys or whatever for around $10, seemed to cut oil consumption dramatically in the last month I owned it. Basically add it instead of 1 of the quarts of oil at an oil change. Good luck...

Oil that leaks by the engine's piston rings and valve seals will, with an efficient catalytic converter in the exhaust system, burn in the converter, hence no or little smoke.
