Timing Belt Replacement
Asked by toddskibinski Aug 01, 2007 at 08:00 PM about the 2001 Acura TL
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I am due for a Timing Belt Replacement (105,000 mi service) and was quoted $850 through Acura. Does this price seem high? Would this service be able to be performed by any mechanic? Thanks. Todd Skibinski

Hi toddskibinski, Yes, any seasoned professional should be able to accomplish the same task. Your normal mechanic should be able to get this done for less than $500 or $600 unless something drastic is required during the belt replacement. Hope this helps!
When you replace the timing belt, you also should replace the water pump, its run by the timing belt and is recommended by Acura, this saves you time, while your replaceing the timing belt you might as well, saves time and it it siezes your timing belt may break and the engine in your car is an interfierance head. which means if the timing belt breaks, you pistons hit your valves and you'd probably need a new engine.
Why are you using my name?
Did you look at the date of the posting? If your name were "that" much of a factor, why react to it now?
He probably googled his name and this was likely near the top... Wait checking, yup number 4 on the list.

I am looking at purchasing a 1999 Acrua Tl that has 92,000 miles. Can I drive it a little longer before I have to replace the timing belt? I know there is a chance but it can't just go bad at 90,000.
the price is not great. i think u can get a better deal at ebay or autozone. http://www.acuratls.com/
I was just quoted $798 for replacement of the timing belt and water pump at an Acura Dealership.
$800-$1k is going to be pretty standard for a dealership. If you can find a local shop that does good work, you can get it lower, into the $500-$700 range. And @miraclemike, Sure, you could probably drive it, but why take the chance. It's likely that with 92k on it, it has already gotten the timing belt replaced once. If it hasn't, just pony up the extra $700 to get it done, and you know that you should be good for another 50-90k. Spend $700 and know, or don't, and let the cars engine tear itself apart... your call.

You're all in the ball park. I know a Acura certified mechanic and he does the service on my car. I buy the parts from http://www.acuraoemparts.com/ (Acura Dealer with discount) and pay him cash for the labor. He replaces: Water Pump, Timing Belt, A/C Belt, Spark Plugs. $300 cash and about $250 in parts. Typically, I think they charge 1k at the dealer for the same service (depending on your part of the country).

Yes. if you've got ANY mechanic skill level 1A will be able to not overtorque the cover fasteners, and count teeth.

Hi, I have a 2006 Acura TL about 90,000 miles. Is it time to change the timing belt. Can't find anything on the manual. Also how much it should cost to replace it in the auto shop?

I have a 2007 Acura TL with 90,000 + miles. I took to my car to a private auto shop (five stars), where friends have recommended. I am having the timing belt, valves adjusted, engine mounts, power steering fluid replaces (small leak - no biggie), and among other maintenance repairs that are needed. Quoted me at $1,050. The dealer ship would have charged me more than half of this.

Man, you folks are lucky. Dealership quoted me $1,250 for timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and serpentine. A couple of local shops quoted me $1,100 - $1,450 for JUST the timing belt and water pump. Effing Chicagloand.
dealership in NJ quoted me 1350, finally agreed on discount and all with a final price of 950. After starting the work received a call about some tension belt replacement for 143 (it is making some sound). Asked not to change it and only change timing belt, Water pump.

Hi I need info on setting the timing on an 02 Acura 3.5 cant find anything on it...Any help would really be super helpfull.Thank you
Paying today $1,755 for timing belt new water pump, air filter and in cab, coolant replacement new belts and plugs and some other stuff that sounded expensive 2008 TL with 105000 miles but my car is in great shape so it's cheaper then a car payment And I'm in so California
My 2005 Acura TL with 129,000 miles is having the timing belt, water pump, tension pulleys, etc. replaced at R&D Motorsports In Santa Cruz. Given a quote of $1200-$1400. Might as well add a tune-up while it's in there! The guys do awesome work! Remember, "You get what you pay for!"
Just received $1,800 quotes from two different local Acura dealerships for replacing the timing belt, water pump, and spark plugs and inspecting the valve clearance.
I've got 306,000 miles on my 2008 TLS! A local shop for water pump and timing belt - quoted $700 for both.
I was quoted CAD$1,400 at Pickering Acura (Canada) to replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and 1 year/20,000 Km warranty.
For Nicole, That is an excellent price and I wouldn't even bother shopping around. I am impressed that your vehicle has so many miles and is still getting around. A very good example of what these vehicles will do for you and all is needed is to keep them serviced. Thanks, Tony
I got a quote for my 09 Acura TL to have the belt, pulleys, tensioner, water pump and oil change with a free car wash for $820 at Acura of Fort Wayne; but a neighborhood mechanic shop that usually beats most dealers prices quoted me $980 for the same work but no car wash.
I paid $16.00 for a timing belt and replaced it myself - for the third time 1997 CL 3.0, 148k miles. Took 1 day.
I have an 07 Acura TL with 207K. I was quoted $1300 for timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, oil change and a tune up at an Acura Speedcraft dealership in RI. Got it down to $1150 (with taxes). I’ll probably get it done there because they do good work there and I figure this will be the last time I get it done (supposed to be done every 105K and was done at 105K, so it was due via A4 maintenance light).

I just bought a 2012 Acura TL Tech with 65,000 miles and wanted to "deal-in" the replacement of the timing belt and water pump into the selling price, but the dealer told me the belt didn't need changing until 100,000 miles (like I read here in this forum)...yet when I go to the Maintenance Calculator on the (canadian) Acura website it says to replace the timing belt at 100,000 km, which is 62,000 miles. I know there are emission controls different between Canada ans US, but a timing belt replacement schedule ?? Actually, I couldn't even get a straight answer from the dealer on whether my 2012 TL had a timing belt or timing chain (apparently the earlier half of 2012 has the belt, and the later half has the chain...or vice-versa I'm not sure). I experienced a busted timing belt in another V6 3.5l engine back in 2010 and it cost me an engine ($3,400!!) so you'll understand I'm a little paranoid about this. Thanks for your thoughts!
You need to do what the rest of us do and that is to check out the answer in your car's owner's manual. It is best that way rather than to rely on what a dealer offers as a viable answer. Best, Tony
I have a 2006 TL the timing belt was replaced at 110,000 and a new mechanic just told me $1,000 to replace again at 160,000! Does this sound right? And no mention of water pump??
