2009 kia borrego back hatch won't stay open all of a sudden

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We used back hatch at grocery everything was fine. Came home lifted it was fine a few
min later it slammed down on my husbands head. Now it won't stay open. There even
appears to be a resistance unless it's the weight. It was easy to open and close because
it would just gently shut and latch when you lowered most of the way before. It also has
this pliable latch that un latched it without much pressure. What's wrong and about how
much is it to fix we have only had it 2 1/2 mths

This vehicle is equipped with 2 rear hatch liftgate Supports. They look like miniature shocks, one either side. These are gas charged and they should have resistance. To test, simply remove them. There will be a small snap clip that needs to be removed. They should push out by themselves and there should be resistance to them when you push them back in. The seals go bad in these often and they loose their charge. Nothing out of the ordinary. Common wear. You can pick these up online or auto parts store. Bring one in so you can match it up.
