Question type: Maintenance & Repair
How often did the older Mercedes-Benz models require maintenance versus the newer models of today? Is it less expensive to maintain a classic versus a brand new model?

Really depends on the overall condition, but, Mercedes Benz cars have VERY EXPENSIVE parts. Read this,. http://community.cartalk.com/t/when-do-you-it-is-time-to-buy-a- new-car-and-stop-repairing-your-old-one-buy-or-repair/77930
The new cars are a LOT safer and generally need less repairs and are more reliable.....I would ALWAYS choose a newer model for safety....
I completely agree with tennisshoes on this, excellent advice.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your quick answers and advice! This would be a collector I buy later down the road. How much do you think an engine upgrade would cost, if it is done right?
Call and find a good independent mechanic who works on Mercedes Benz engines and have them rebuild the engine from the ground up... If you are keeping this as a collector's item, I would keep the car as original as possible... If you put in a brand new motor, I don't think it would be worth as much down the road..
If you are buying the car because you want a classic that few people have, for weekend driver - then have it professionally inspected. Depending on its history and the amount you drive it, repairs and upkeep may not be to bad. However, parts may be difficult and/or expensive to obtain. If you are looking for a daily driver - then look at much newer MB"s as others have suggested.
How old are you?? Why? Whenever you want to become a "collector" , it's a distinct advantage to have "time on your side".. If you are buying something and thinking that you can see this increase in value in less than 10 years, you are fooling yourself.

Hey fellas, I am 33. It's not my intent to increase the value of the car itself when,I fins the' 72 280 sel, this is a car I intend to hang on to. I'm sure you're asking, why does he want a forty year old car when he can have a new one? I've had new cars and have had nothing but trouble, with older, I've always lucked out and just want that car that turns heads when you're driving by.
