It is the model,there was a w114 and a w115 model in this year,one came with 4cylinder and the other with v6

W - saloon, T - estate/wagon, C - coupe, R - convertible. So to put that into context, if we look at the old style E-class from the 80's/90's, the one before the twin round headlights, that model is referred to as the 124 chassis in the industry. So when describing the body shape each one would be referred to as follows: Saloon - W124 Estate - T124 Coupe - C124 and finally Convertible - R124.
