69 Factory Tach Help

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A previous owner installed a factory tach, but it doesn't work. The first issue
I spotted is the Tach lead,  a two wire harness with 1 red wire,1 black wire,
and a large firewall plug. It appears to be properly connected under the
dash, but the black wire is cut in the engine compartment. I have no idea
where the black wire should go. They have spliced the red wire into the
regular red w/green stripe coil feed near the coil. I thought on factory tach
cars the tach lead should go directly to the coil, and split to the red/green
somewhere under the dash. I haven't pulled the dash out yet, wanted to get
the engine compartment right first. I know black would typically indicate a
ground, just not sure why they would run that all the way to the front of the
block, or where it would attach to.... lol, never had a factory tach car before.

ok... found a wiring diagram I can read. The black tach lead plugs directly into the standard / regular red w/green wire that would go to the coil in a non-tach car. (The black tach lead should have a male connector on it that pushes into the red w/green boot). The red w/green tach lead is now the direct connection to the coil. Re-wired according to the diagram and the tach works just like it should!!

Where does the hole need to be drilled for the factory tachometer through the firewall ? Need the correct location for drilling.
