How are you thinking you are going to mate the FWD Toyota engine to a rear wheel drive transmission that will work in a 73 Torino?

A Ford 302 (5.0) with a 4 speed auto and fuel injection from an older Mustang would probably get you 20 mpg on the highway.

Ditto to F_O_R's answer, just get a nice little 302 and make it a cruiser. If you're worried about gas mileage probably shouldn't have bought a 73 Torino.

well if this mating of 2 things will not work any other ideas like what car should I get the engine from or should I just replace everything to make it fit together

Get the engine, transmission, wiring harness and computer.

Anything with the EFI you'll want the computer, unless you go the expensive route of getting an aftermarket computer setup. (Holley makes an EFI you can stick on an older engine for about 1K). The beauty about your Ford is you can run just about anything in there. The only sticking point you might run into is a starter motor not clearing the steering box, should you try jamming a 460 truck motor in there, lol. If you want some really in depth build tips, try the Gran Torino Sport forums, at forum.grantorinosport.org/forums.html, I'm on there as "Grokrok". I had a 75 Elite.

I used to have a 1971 GT Torino convertible.

the thing is I always liked classic cars and I always wanted to daily one and I saw the Torino up for sale and I couldn't pass it up so my plan is to put a new engine and fix anything wrong and just drive it everywhere. I appreciate the help so far and thank all of you

ok, so my current plan is to find a Mustang takeout the engine transmission and any other parts I need. anything else?

Your 73 most likely has a mechanical fuel pump. If you swap to a newer engine, you'll need to get an electric fuel pump. So new engine/tranny, alter the driveshaft, install electric fuel pump, alter wire harness including adopting ECU and ignition module.... This is a pretty ambitious project. You may or may not want to consider updating brakes too.

yeah I'm not too sure about the drum brakes and yes it is a bit of an ambitious project I'm trying to keep this thing on the street as long as possible and I always wanted to do something special for my first car
