Refrigerant does not evaporate from the closed system, nor does it go bad. It leaks out through a hole somewhere in the system. One pound of refrig is expensive, you system probably takes close to two. Have a shop determine the cause of the leak and have it fixed. To do the repair yourself you'll need a set of manifold gauges (about fifty bucks from a place like harbor freight) plus a vacuum pump to evac the system after replacing the defective part (about 150 bucks for a cheap one). You are already in 200 bucks before you purchase parts. You'll have to replace the accumulator/dryer along with any other part in need of replacement.
