Does a 1975 Spitfire with H pattern shift have to be in nuetral to start the car?

I don't think it makes any difference.

Manufacturers have used several interlocks over the years. I once had a '73 that, as I recall, had to either be in 1st or reverse with the clutch engaged to start it. I would try all 5 positions to determine what yours requires. Either you will find the right position or determine you need a new switch.
BoholMark and taver91 Thank you both. We found we were able to start the car by just "fully" depressing the clutch pedal even though the transmission is stuck in 3 rd gear.
