Could be an engine issue?

Mt Ford 2004 Taurus will start however will not go
in gear! Is that transmission? Is it true the
transmission oil can go bad?

Probably a transmission issue and yes transmission oil goes bad. If it is brown, black or smells burned you need to change it and the filter.
