1964 Mercury Comet Caliente low fuel light

Does a 1964 Comet Caliente have a low fuel light ? It makes a difference in
which fuel sending unit to buy, and I need to know. The fuel gauge was not
working and we just got this car. When did they start putting low fuel lights in
Comets, and did any model of the 1964 Comet have them. Ours is a Caliente.

No, there's no low fuel light on any 1964 Comets. If your gas gauge always reads empty it's a bad ground. If it always reads full it's a bad power connection. If it's not accurate it's either the sending unit in the gas tank or the gauge itself on the dash. Low fuel warning lights didn't start showing up as options until the mid 70s. Hope that helps! Jim

Thanks for your answer. It was a big help. One other question. Our 1964 Comet Caliente has one bad headlamp. It is original part number 4001. Is there a replacement that matches the original bulbs ? Who made the original bulbs.? We bought a new halogen lamp but it looks slightly different and also makes a brighter light. Were the original lamps halogen ?
The original lights were not halogen. If this were my car I would switch to halogen for safety but if you are going for a national champion show car you can hunt down OEM lights.
You're welcome. Glad to help! As F_O_R said the original headlight bulbs were not halogen. The non halogen 4001 bulbs are still out there. But you have to look for them on places like Ebay, for example. I don't really know who made the original bulbs. But if I had to guess I'd say GE or Westinghouse. Hope that helps! Jim
