Should my 1970 2002 BMW be turning 5000rpms at 55 mph?

Probably not, what transmission and axle ratio do you have?
I assume this is an automatic transmission . so does it shift ? If you can feel it shift three or four times then your tachometer is outta whack . but check your tranny fluid (should be red in color and smell it on the dipstick . ) If it smells like a burned up electric motor ,its bad news
That is a bit high, but like previously mentioned, you probably have the automatic. With my 2002 I am pushing 3500 at 70mph.

It is way high unless you are in 3rd. If automatic then you have either a transmission issue or a tach issue. I'd bet the tach. You must be able to tell if the engine is at near peak, the noise would be deafening..
